When it comes to selecting a Content Management System (CMS) for your website, there are several aspects you need to consider to get the most out of it. Several choices are available today, all with their pros and cons and communities that are rooting for their platform. Among them all are two that stand out: WordPress and Joomla.

These two platforms are known for their extensive ability for customisation, ease of use along with active communities. Aside from that, WordPress and Joomla can be used to create modern, feature-filled websites. So how are you going to choose the right one for your needs?

To help you out, let’s take a look at a comparison between these two.

Comparing WordPress and Joomla

The main difference between the two is that Joomla began as a CMS that was meant to service portal-like sites. WordPress, on the other hand, was originally a platform for blogging. Nowadays, these two are now among the best choices to develop and run any kind of website you have in mind.

Search Engine Optimisation

When looking at the SEO capabilities offered by both platforms, Joomla seems to be at an advantage out of the box because of its ability to let users set meta descriptions and keywords for their new articles. With that said, either platform’s true SEO potential isn’t readily seen unless we delve into the extensions or plugins available for this task.

For WordPress, you have the popular Yoast SEO plugin which provides a lot of SEO features that is easy to work with for whatever skill level. The plugin will categorise the SEO score of a website in various areas using a traffic light system of colours. Aside from that, Yoast will also provide users with advice on how they can improve their scores in every area along with its readability.

On Joomla’s end, an equivalent that can be seen for Yoast is the Easy Frontend SEO (EFSEO). This plugin lets you do almost similar tasks mentioned above – like editing meta data – straight on the front end of your website. Also included here is a useful automatic mode which generates data without requiring input.

But no matter how handy EFSEO seems, it is clearly not a match against Yoast’s SEO features. Because of this, WordPress gets one point over Joomla in terms of search engine optimisation capabilities.

Security

With regards to security vulnerabilities, WordPress paints a big target on its back due to how popular it is as a CMS. Every installation of a WordPress website is different thanks to its numerous plugins as well as themes available for it. Although this may be seen as a positive, it can be a big problem from a security perspective. The reason for this is because it’s impossible to ensure that each plugin follows proper safety standards while remaining compatible with the latest versions of WordPress.

Aside from that, WordPress doesn’t come with basic features like forcing a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) connectivity on the dashboard. You will have to configure its core files to enable this. In fact, you’ll find that most of its advanced security features depend heavily on plugins.

Joomla, on the other hand, comes with the option to force SSL connections and another for Two-Factor Authentication. Aside from that, it has its own set of security extensions.

So when talking about security capabilities, Joomla wins this round.

Customisation

We already talked about some of the extensions and plugins for both platforms. WordPress and Joomla have their own roster of these plugins available, but WordPress wins in terms of quantity.

But when you look at the top extensions for each CMS, WordPress seems to provide more useful information over its counterpart. Although Joomla has just as many features as WordPress, the latter simply gives a much better experience overall.

As with designing the style of a website, the same thing can be said here. Not only are WordPress themes of higher quality, but they also have better support than Joomla’s.

So for customisation, we can say that WordPress wins this one.

Content Management

WordPress and Joomla are both sophisticated CMS that allows users to develop and manage just about any kind of website. Although WordPress is more known for its simple blogs, it can also be used to make great landing pages and complex websites.

Joomla, on the other hand, provides users with amazing documentation. You can make almost anything you want when you’re building a site with Joomla. However, its learning curve is a lot steeper for people who lack web development experience.

Although in terms of potential both are fairly equal, we can say that WordPress lets users manage their content rather easily. Almost anyone can install the platform and create pages, posts and other customisation in minutes while Joomla can be less forgiving.

With all that said, WordPress wins the final round which makes it the overall winner in this comparison.

Conclusion

But that doesn’t mean that Joomla is a bad platform. It has its benefits too like being more flexible compared to WordPress. It has a nice customisation system that can let users make any website they want while enabling them to implement minor changes without relying on plugins all the time.

However, WordPress wins the comparison simply because it can do more in terms of website SEO, content management, and customisation potential. Aside from that, WordPress is also a lot easier to get started with even for beginners and its popularity provides an additional benefit as it has a better support system in place.
